Original copperplate engraving of Le Couguar, Le Linx (The Cougar, The Lynx) by artist François-Nicolas Martinet. From the natural history encyclopedia Histoire Naturelle, part of a larger work by the engraver Comte de Buffon, Circa 1774. Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin.
