Rare & original hand colored copperplate engraving featuring astronomical knowledge, by Henri Abraham Chatelain from his Atlas Historique. The work was published by the author in Amsterdam circa 1718. The text was compiled by Gueudeville & Garillon.
The print features a central depiction of an armillary sphere, flanked by diagrams illustrating the Copernican heliocentric system, the Ptolemaic geocentric model, and the Tychonic system — reflecting the great scientific debate of the era. Additional vignettes include hemispheric world maps, a stunning dark-ground Copernican world diagram, and a detailed star chart at lower center. Dense French-language commentary fills the lower portion of the sheet, offering historical and scientific context for each system depicted.
Chatelain's Atlas Historique was a highly ambitious and groundbreaking work covering genealogy, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and chronology. It was intended for the general public and the increased fascination with the recently conquered colonies and the new discoveries.
Custom framed in a floating design with UV-resistant glass and a black wood gilt frame. In excellent condition, some wear with age. Dimensions: 30.5" x 27”.
